Our friends at Vancouver ACM SIGGRAPH are pleased to announce SPARK FX ’10, a visual FX conference and festival that provides insights to the latest artistic and technological innovations in the field of visual effects.

Conference talks by speakers representing some of the best international and local VFX studios and research facilities will span such topics as concept art, title design, modeling, miniatures, proprietary visual effects tools and physics-based animation.

John Knoll, ILM’s Visual Effects Supervisor and one of the co-creators of Photoshop will open the conference with “An Interactive Keynote Session with VFX Pioneer John Knoll” on January 28. John is one of a few individuals who have played a pivotal role in the advancement of computer graphics and the art of visual effects. John created Adobe’s flagship graphics software Photoshop with his brother Thomas and worked on many groundbreaking visual effects films including, The Abyss, theStar Wars prequels and special editions of the original trilogy, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and most recently Avatar. This year marks the 20thanniversary of Photoshop, one of the best tech products of all time. It opened the door for image manipulation on a grand scale and paved a way for filmmakers to create convincing new worlds digitally.

Danny Yount, Senior Creative Director of Prologue Films will open the second day of the conference with a unique presentation, “VFX in Motion Graphics” where he’ll share his insights on the high art of main titles and why visual effects is so important to graphic design and graphic design to visual effects. A self-taught designer, Danny Yount has exercised his natural talent to become one of today’s top main title designers for film and television, as well as a photographer and commercial director.  His work has earned many notable industry awards – TDC, BDA Gold, D&AD Silver, 3 Gold awards from the AIGA, as well as an Emmy for his concept, design and direction of the opening sequence of HBO’s Six Feet Under, which has been called “televison’s most gorgeous opening sequence”.

Dan Lemmon, Weta Digital Visual Effects Supervisor will close the conference on Saturday January 30, with a special behind-the-scenes looks at the making of the blockbuster film Avatar. Dan will share his experience working on this mythical project, from initial conceptual designs, to the complex and immense task of look development for all the digital assets on the Planet Pandora, to the creative and technical challenges of animating believable digital characters that manage to escape the uncanny valley while breaking new grounds in stereo 3-D.

Spark FX ’10 film festival will take place at the Vancity Theatre from January 27 to 31 with evening screenings of some of the most significant visual effects films.
