Tashia Potter - 2010 Hemlock Printers Scholarship Award Winner!
Aaron Heppell, February 28, 2011 at 6:49 PM

Tashia Potter lives on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in Port Alberni, BC. She is currently in her second year of the Graphic Design degree program at Vancouver Island University, choosing photography, Typography and Web Design as her favorite areas of practice. She finds great reward in being consumed by the intricate nature of these subjects, and the process of dissecting and manipulating the tiny details, to then be able to step back and see a whole picture in the end. Tashia is passionate about design and the role it plays in society, and plans to make socially responsible contributions to the field.

Tashia looks forward to working in the industry after graduation. She hopes to start as an in-house designer working in a design firm to begin to get a real life feel for the industry. Her dream job would include photography, design, as well as fashion into one all incompassing role, as Tashia is also a seamstress and spends her free time hand printing textiles. Tashia is extremely excited about choosing this career path and is enjoying every step of the education, which she says happens at every curve, she sees everything differently now.

The Society of Graphic Designers of Canada Vancouver Island Chapter (GDC VI) Scholarship Awards are Vancouver Island’s pre-eminent educational awards, funded by GDC VI initiatives and Hemlock Printers, and coordinated by the GDC VI. Since 1956 the GDC has been dedicated to improving graphic design standards and practice in the workplace and in schools. The GDC VI Student Scholarship Awards were initiated in 2008 to encourage and support students in taking their design education to a level that will prepare them for professional practice. Aspiring designers from Vancouver Island who are full-time students and student members enrolled in 2-, 3-, and 4-year graphic design programs, returning to continue their studies are invited to enter the GDC VI Scholarship Awards Program. Winners will receive scholarship awards applied directly to their tuition fees. The winning students are profiled on the GDC national website, and the national and chapter newsletters.
