Lessons in Urban Wayfinding | An SEGD Vancouver Event
Darren Carcary, November 23, 2011 at 7:24 AM

Learn how a holistic approach to identity, brand and wayfinding can contribute to a cities’ competitive edge. Project innovations will include dynamic technologies, landscape, gateways, public art and placemaking. The lecture will also include how interior designers, architects, landscape architects, and exhibition designers can also engage in the urban realm.

We are living in the urban millennium. Cities are now home to more than half of the world’s population and generate more than 80% of the global GDP. The next coming decades will see a shift from traditional national economies to networks of metropolitan power where cities will compete for investment and talent on a global scale.

As cities become denser and more complex, there is a growing need for cities to be livable, accessible, efficient and optimized to reduce carbon. Benchmark projects like “Legible London” have demonstrated how wayfinding design can effectively contribute to these goals through multi disciplinary collaboration and innovative partnerships.

In this lunch hour session, Craig Berger will share his experiences leading successful projects from design to execution using strategies to enable, finance and deploy large scale public projects.

Adrian Bell of Applied will discuss how wayfinding is becoming a strategic issue for cities helping them become more accessible and inclusive to active forms of travel like walking and cycling. As a transportation planner and engineer, Adrian brings a unique perspective on establishing and implementing major wayfinding projects in the public sector.
