Do Good Design

Project Name: Do Good Design book | Design: David Berman Communications, w/ Erik Spiekermann |
Date Completed: January 2009 | Designers/Illustrators: David Berman, Cynthia Hoffos, Trevor Johnston |
Client Name: Pearson/Peachpit Press/AIGA | Project Description: Peachpit Press, a division of Pearson, the world's largest educational publisher, wanted to proudly publish a book on design and social responsibility, in alignment with their formative roots from San Francisco in the 1960s. AIGA Press also published the book. (And that they hired us to design the book that I was writing was especially complimentary). They were very pleased with the design and content, as indicated by the foreword that AIGA's own executive director chose to write. The impact of the book has exceeded expectations, with the book now being translated into Korean, Russian, Chinese, Indonesian, and Spanish. Multidisciplinary accolades have come from Vint Cerf, vice-president at Google, to Edward Asner, former president of the Screen Actors Guild, to past-presidents of Icograda.
The book led to an invitation to speak at a United Nations conference on how design can help fulfill the millennium goals, and to an appointment from the United Nations for the author. The design of the book incorporates a Sharpie motif as symbolic of creative "design thinking" (which was enthusiastically endorsed by the manufacturers!) where the author uses a Sharpie throughout the book to critique his own thoughts. The typographic styling of the book was carefully crafted, under the collaborative guidance of Erik Spiekermann, designer or publisher of all of the typefaces in the colophon (Meta Plus and DIN families from Erik's FontShop). The book also integrates with a companion Web site, where the book's pledge can be taken by readers. For more on the book, visit http://www.dogoodbook.com. | PHOTO: DESIGNBOOM.COM
