Time: 9:00 am on Friday, April 4 to 9:00am on Saturday, April 5th, 2008.
Place: Mount Royal College, Calgary
It was organised as a 24-hour creative marathon - an innovative way to make a positive impact on our community. Volunteers included creative professionals from every corner: print designers, web designers, writers, illustrators and photographers. It facilitated the production of work that the chosen charities could not afford to contract out. That work provides the framework for these organizations to go forward with their marketing programs and fundraising efforts in a way that will be more effective than it could possibly be without professional support. The organizations that benefitted were:
- Cerebral Palsy Association in Alberta
- Santa’s Secret Service
- Community Kitchen Program of Calgary Society
- Community Rehabilitation Service Provider Council of Calgary
- The Sharp Foundation
One of the most interesting challenges of this collaboration was the fact that most of the participants had never met one another prior to the event, let alone worked together. But we discovered that working with people who had unfamiliar approaches to problem-solving was almost as beneficial to the creative process as it was difficult. Another truly unique and rewarding benefit of the event was the opportunity to provide hands-on mentorship for student designers who participated actively on the teams.
The entire process would have fallen down, however, if not for the solid foundation of pre-prep work by the Creative Directors. They took the time to meet with their Design-A-Thon® clients in weeks prior to develop solid understandings of the needs and goals of their respective projects. It’s a tribute to their leadership skills that they managed to assess the strengths of the people on their teams quickly and direct them to develop strong solutions in the time available.
