Typecon 2010 - Calgary?
Danny Lin, January 03, 2009 at 7:51 AM

Recently, Calgary was  scouted out as a possible host city for Typecon. A few of the GDC executives met with a representative from SOTA about this and we'd like to hear about what the design community thinks.

Are people interested in going? Volunteering?

Give us your thoughts!

Yes yes and yes! It would be an amazing event for the Calgary design community. I would definitely attend. May be able to volunteer depending on dates.

Attend, sponsor, volunteer & whatever else is needed! Last year was outstanding, lets make it happen here at home... Wooo!

Naoko Masuda(3 years ago)
Yes please!

Terry Lynn Massey(3 years ago)
Definitely interested. Volunteering would be great, provided that the event doesn't conflict with school deadlines!

Elaine Prodor(3 years ago)
Let's do it . . . this old world needs great typography more than ever!

Colin Sproule(3 years ago)
I would feel awesome!

Mike Tighe(3 years ago)

type addicts unite!
There isn't just a need for a show/conference of this type to place this city on the design business map, but a real demand from our design and art community. Let's make this happen. You have my entire support! I've already cleared my schedule to help do whatever it takes.

Calvin Sun(3 years ago)
Yes!!!!

Steve Seeley(3 years ago)
This would be most excellent! Let's make it happen.

Stephanie Buchan(3 years ago)
Definitely! It would be great!

Calgary's culture is growing and something like this would be an exploding point for a lot of creative projects to happen. Besides where do type junkies hang out in Calgary anyways? Let's get 'em together in 2010!!

Wish you guys the best of luck!
We can do it together!

Absolutely! It's about time the wild west hosted a major design event - wouldn't it be a nice change NOT to have to travel to Toronto?

Janine Vangool(3 years ago)
This would be a great thing for Calgary's creative community and UPPERCASE has volunteered its support to the organizers of TypeCon.

I have attended TypeCon since 2003 and have to say that the level of pre-conference enthusiasm in Calgary matches (if not exceeds) that of any of the previous six events. This will be the first time since 2002 that TypeCon may be held north of the 49th (… of course, Toronto got the nod that time too.)

There is so much going on in Calgary’s visual arts and creative communities right now, the timing is perfect for this type of gathering. Typography and type design extends into many peripheral areas: calligraphy, linguistics, book arts, publishing, printing, motion graphics, information design … &c. TypeCon embraces all of these areas … and beyond. Moreover, it’s a social gathering of like (and differing) minds. And I cannot overemphasis the importance of volunteerism. Echoing Xerxes’ comment, please get involved if you have the opportunity.

This would be such a great event to have come to Calgary. I would definitely throw myself into helping out!

Michael Mateyko(3 years ago)
Sounds like a fun time.

Gillian M(3 years ago)
Would fully support TypeCon's return to Canada.

I've salivated for years about the prospect of attending a TypeCon conference. I would certainly attend if it came to Calgary.

Dustin Biagioni(2 years ago)
Love to see the opportunity! I would be there with an arsenal of creativity!

Randy Milanovic(2 years ago)
Fantastic. Holding an event here sounds great.

Unfortunately, Tamye Riggs of SOTA announced today that TypeCon 2010 will be held in Los Angeles because of the economy: Calgary doesn't have a big enough resident designer community (well, compared to L.A.!)....

Sorry folks!

Nooo, now Im sad. I only hope that in the future we Calgaryians get the love we deserve.
