Student Portfolio Review Night - May 28/2009

A record fifteen students —from design programs across the city—came out last Thursday to The Hub in Halifax for the Student Portfolio Review. It was a great to see peers and professionals provide advice to students and have an open dialogue about graphic design in our community.

Without them, this event would not have been possible. A special thanks to all MGDC members who gave their time:

Kelly Burke
Larry Burke
Dennis Page
Grant Tomchuk

In addition, we welcome two new volunteers to the Atlantic Chapter. Thanks to Katrina Bautista & Nathan Nearing for all of their help to make the event a success!

As usual, there was a draw, and congratulations to the winner, Liam Smedley. He is taking home a GDC Pantone thumb drive.

Good luck at the next event, we look forward to seeing you there!

With an attendance of 45, it was one of our most successful AGM’s in recent years. If you couldn’t join us that day, you missed a great time with great food and a chance to mingle with like-minded people.

Thanks to Michelle Doucette and Richard Osborne who took the photos that day.
See our slide show from the AGM (pdf).

Here’s a re-cap on what’s happened in the Chapter this past year:

The past year has been a more successful one than the previous year in terms of member participation at events and initiatives undertaken by the Executive and Council. With new volunteers on Council recruited at the last AGM, we’ve been able to establish a communications committee which has helped us in organizing events and which has infused us with incentive –new, young blood with fresh ideas are always welcome!

Events over the past year have included:

Jay Rutherford talk – March 12, 2008
In collaboration with NSCAD, we presented a talk by Jay Rutherford, who was here for two weeks teaching in the Master’s Design program at NSCAD.

Portfolio Review Night – May 5, 2008
An evening where professionals were available to meet with students to give constructive feedback on their portfolio, as they prepare to enter the design profession.

Lunch and Learn – June 25, 2008
Dawson Printshop tour: Joe Landry, the printshop manager, gave an enlightening history of the shop from its early days housed at Dalhousie’s library services, to its current home at NSCAD. We had a great turnout for this event. It was the beginning of our higher attendance at events organized by the Chapter.

Graphex 2008 – September 22-2, 2008
We hosted this travelling exhibition from National at the Anna Leonowens gallery at NSCAD. Graphex is a national juried exhibit showcasing the best of visual communication design in Canada. The show also went to PEI, Holland College for display. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped to mount the show and take it down.

Gaspereau Press – November 24, 2008
Andrew Steeves, printer/typographer and co-owner of Gaspereau Press in Kentville gave a presentation “How Photos Trumped Type”. This event was very well attended and we were particularly pleased to see a great turnout of students from both NSCAD and NSCC.

We look forward to another successful year – momentum is building! Look for upcoming events on this site. If you are interested in volunteering with the Chapter please contact us at

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with our events this past year!
