The GDC’s 2005-2006 Annual Report “Designing Canada for 50 Years” won a spot in the first annual International Design Awards (IDA). The IDA is promoting the winning architects and designers of interiors, products, graphics and fashion internationally as visionary leaders in their fields.
With nearly 1,000 entries from 42 countries, judges chose 110 winners from work they called “exciting" and “indicative of thoughtful, visionary and creative solutions to design problems internationally.” Winners’ work will be featured on the www.designawards.com website; spotlighted in the IDA07 art book, to be distributed to museum and art bookstores in the US; and explored in the week-long IDA Visionary Exhibit taking place at the Museum of Design Art and Architecture in Los Angeles March 8-14, 2008.
The GDC’s 2005-06 annual report was designed by Suburbia Advertising, Victoria, BC. Jeremie White MGDC was the lead designer on the project. The book features iconic Canadian logos many of which were designed by past and present GDC members. It was part of the celebration of the GDC’s 50th anniversary year and has garnered praise and attention from designers and design educators across the country. The report was printed in Vancouver by Benwell Atkins, on Stora Enso’s FSC Certified Centura Silk and Matte.
Jurors in the architecture, interior, graphic, product and fashion categories for the awards included Dwell magazine New York Editor Michael Cannell; Judge on BravoTV's Top Design Kelly Wearstler; House Beautiful Senior Style Director Newell Turner; Los Angeles Times WEST Magazine Style Editor Barbara Thornburg; RISD's Furniture Department Chairman John Dunnigan; David Hertz, AIA; Gwynne Pugh, AIA; Josh Rubin, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher, cool hunting; Rido Busse, celebrated product designer for Krups and professor at Ulm Design School in Germany; Rose Apocada, fashion writer for Bazaar and owner of A+D Design Store in Los Angeles; apartmenttherapy.com Editor in Chief Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan; and IdN Columnist and graphic design critic Laurence Ng.
