Kaapstad Tee Company
Kaapstad Tee Company

Packaging for a South African tea company based in Kaapstad (Cape Town), South Africa, specializing in the export of Rooibos Tee (Red Bush Tea) and Heuningbos Tee (Honey Bush Tea).
Problem
Although Rooibos and Heuningbos teas are already sold in North America, they are generally positioned as health food supplements or merely as extensions of an existing brand's marketing mix that is not focused on communicating the interesting history of the teas.
Approach
The approach for this project was to communicate the history of the teas' cultivation by European settlers who historically used the teas as a replacement for traditional black teas which became too expensive to import from Europe.
Each package has been treated as a botanical specimen discovered by European settlers and exported to the western world for “studying.” The botanical illustrations*, stamped identity, woodblock type, and kraft packing paper creates the look of a package sent from afar. Ragged perforations on the packages would allow users to tear them open crudely, symbolically discovering the tea for themselves and reinforcing the tagline, Discover the tea of South Africa.
