From the Crafting Type series
Creating a Typeface from Sketch Through Software
with Dave Crossland
Edmonton, AB
Aug 27-31, 2012
Dave Crossland is a UK-based type designer, best known for creating the Cantarell typeface: a beautiful contemporary Humanist sans serif. He perfected his craft of type design during his study of MA Typeface Design over 2 years in the Department of Typography at the University of Reading (UK) and is currently working as ‘Font Consultant’ to the Google Web Fonts project.
This workshop will focus on the entire process of creating a typeface: proper paper sketching techniques; digital font creation; OpenType features and more. By the end of the five days, you will have all the tools to complete your typeface family you started in this workshop; plus, we’ll even talk about the business side of type design.
The GDC Alberta North Chapter is proud to be one of the sponsors for this exciting event. As part of our sponsorship, we are able to offer our valued GDC members a discount.
Until August 15: 25% discount off the conference fee.
After August 15: 10% discount off the conference fee.

Educators' Webinar Series:
Design Drawing: Renewed Potential in Design Education
Presented by Timothy Samara
August 22, 2012, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM EST
Drawing can be a powerful tool for designers on many levels, yet it seemingly occupies a diminished role in the current teaching of graphic design. In this webinar, designer, author and educator Timothy Samara will discuss the relevance of drawing in contemporary education and practice, stressing its importance as a design process for fundamental skill development and ideation. Far beyond the notion of historically academic pictorial realism or illustration, the discussion will assume a broad definition of drawing that encompasses iconography, symbolism, diagramming, non-pictorial representation, and typography.
