Your chapter's reps are your voice at the national table.
They are the link between the members and the national council. There are up to three representatives per chapter, based on the number of professional Members in the chapter. The president is the first representative and others are elected by the members at the chapter AGM.
Our Society has nine chapters plus a group of members at large, spread across Canada, each with its own strengths and challenges. Chapter and member-at-large representatives provide local viewpoints at the national AGM – a valuable and much needed contribution to the governing of the GDC. The reps make decisions on your behalf. They require your input on issues. Take time to get to know who they are and what they are doing for you.
Chapter reps report to you on what happens at national meetings. It is their job to keep you informed of what is going on, how they have voted and what decisions were made.
It is important that your chapter representatives participate fully, as they also form the pool from which future national executive members are elected. All reps are work on national committees to help the society progress with its goals. Ask your representative about the committee work they are involved in. The committees include: Certification Process, Communication, Constitution, Education, Ethics, Membership, Sponsorship, Sustainability, Web, and Membership Categories Transition. Representatives can always use assistance with national committee work, so if these areas interest you, please volunteer your help!
This year, there was a survey of members, regarding constitutional changes, and the representatives had access to this information before voting. This gave them a chance to be truly informed about members' opinions before this important vote. If you liked the on-line survey approach, let your reps know. Another option for chapter communication is a town hall meeting to air opinions and discuss issues. This also gives members the opportunity to get to know each other's views.
If you are interested in participating in the GDC, the national representative position will give you a wide perspective on issues facing the profession today and offer many great opportunities for active engagement with the society.
