The GDC continues to advocate on behalf of Canadian designers regarding spec. Plus, Icograda is seeking feedback on their competition guidelines.
Here are some of the spec RFPs and contests that were brought to our attention recently.
Feb 9/10 - Atlantic Liquor Boards - RFP asked for spec creative. Sent email explaining our position. They responded that they did not intend to ask for spec work. Suggested new wording to make it clear that the RFP was not requesting spec creative.
Feb 8/10 - Book Industry Environmental Council - Logo Contest. Sent email. No response.
Feb 4/10 - TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival is promoting a design competition. Sent email. They responded that their contest was not spec related but were now aware of our position on contests.
Jan 28/10 - Waterfront Development Corporation Limited. - RFP asked for spec creative. Sent email explaining our position. RFP modified accordingly.
Jan 22/10 - Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo - Logo design contest. Sent email explaining our position. They replied that they wanted to give "emerging artists opportunities". Supplied them with the 2007 Salary Survey so they could understand how much the work they should expect to pay for the logo.
Jan 11/10 - Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce - Logo design contest. Sent email explaining our position. They called to advise that they were not aware of our position and would commit not to holding logo contests in the future.
Dec 14/09 - Grant MacEwan College - RFP asked for spec creative. Sent email explaining our position. They replied that they would not alter their RFP.
The GDC has expressed its concerns to Icograda following Icograda's endorsement of an international contest for the UN World Urban Campaign identity.
As a result, at the upcoming Design Currency: Icograda Design Week in Vancouver, there will be a panel session on global design procurement to explore all aspects of this topic. In parallel, the Icograda Executive Board will be reviewing existing policy as an agenda item when it meets in Vancouver. Icograda is seeking input from their stakeholders to inform the discussion and policy review. They want to hear from all sides of the debate. Post your comments and the Icograda Secretariat will collate them for both the event programming committee and brief to the Executive Board. If you would like to submit a detailed document, please send it to the Icograda Secretariat by 26 Mar 2010.
