Portfolio One-On-One: Call For Mentors!

GDC Manitoba needs Portfolio One-on-One mentors!
This annual event provides opportunities to mentor a student graduating from Graphic Design by reviewing their graduating portfolio.

Where: Kings Head Pub (120 King Street)
When: Tuesday April 27, 2010

Time: 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

(Appetizer platters will be supplied; drinks will be your responsibility!)

There are a lot of students from the University of Manitoba and Red River College interested in participating at this year's event, so the more volunteers the better! And the more professional involvement, the better this event will be for all involved.

If you decide to participate, you'll be scheduled to meet with a student in a time-slot of your choosing. We only ask you to review one student portfolio, but if you can do more it is hugely appreciated.
If you'd like to participate, email the following information by Friday April 16 to education.mb@gdc.net (or call 204.688.5821):

  •
Name
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Number of reviews you would like to perform
  •
Top two preferred time-slots (choose from the following):

  1. A: 5:00 p.m to 5:45 p.m.

  2. B: 6:00 p.m to 6:45 p.m.
  3. C: 7:00 p.m to 7:45 p.m.
  4. D: 8:00 p.m to 8:45 p.m.

The sooner we receive confirmation, the better chance you have of getting a time you've requested.

Off-Site Review

If your schedule does not allow you to do a review on Tuesday, April 27, there is another option: GDC Manitoba can arrange for you to meet with a student on your own schedule. Let us know and we'll pair you with a student to arrange when to meet between Monday April 26 and Friday April 30. This will give you more flexibility, and gives students the opportunity to meet with a professional.

GDC Member Hints

Your job is to offer constructive criticism, helping the student refine their portfolio for when they enter the job market. Personal style preferences should be avoided. Quality of the student's work, problem solving, design, illustration, and production skills should be evaluated based on the student's goals and the marketplace they are trying to enter. Please note also that the students have been told to put together a rough portfolio. This event is to give them a better idea of how to put a good-looking portfolio together, and what work of theirs should be included, as many are unsure. Many students at the point of the interview have portfolio-potential work in progress that they have been encouraged to bring.

It may help to ask the following questions during the review:

  • What kind of job is the student interested in pursuing?
  • What do they think is their strongest skill and why?
  • Does their portfolio or presentation reflect that skill?
  • What do they think is their weakest skill and why?
  • Does their portfolio or presentation reflect that weakness?
  • What skills can the student focus on to improve their portfolio and improve their chances in their job market?

There is plenty of space at The Kings Head for socializing. Come early and/or stick around after your reviews. And if you have any questions at all, contact GDC Manitoba Education Chair Scott Gillam at education.mb@gdc.net or 204.688.5821.
