As designers, almost all the messages we craft depend on letters. We tend to take modern typography tools for granted sometimes but in this Calligraphy Fundamentals for Designers two-day workshop, participants will have the opportunity to get back to the basics and learn from the remarkable Kevin King.
King is an accomplished Toronto-based type designer and calligrapher, perhaps best known for his work on the Gibson typeface (with Rod McDonald Patrick Griffin). He will bring a depth of knowledge to this workshop and a make it a valuable hands-on experience.
When: April 8 to 9, 2017
Where: Red River College, Princess Street Campus, Winnipeg
Refreshments & lunch will be included.
Tickets are available through Eventbrite. ☜ Click that link to register.
Pilot Parallel Pen
The Pilot Parallel pen will be our main tool for the duration of this workshop. It can be used as a dip pen in ink, or with a reservoir that comes with the pen kit. I recommend the 3.8 mm green cap or 2.4 mm yellow cap versions for our workshop.
This paper can be regular 11×17” printer paper, uncoated or coated stocks. We will be using this for our studies and exercises. GDC Manitoba will have some paper supplies on hand but you may wish to bring your own if you have a preference for a certain weight or finish.
Poem or Quote
Please bring along a short poem or quote that you enjoy. This will be a sample text that we use to study writing out the studied alphabets as a text to develop spacing in our letterforms.
Pencil, Eraser & Ruler
These are all of the tools you will need for this workshop.
Blue Sky events are hands-on workshops and lectures presented by GDC Manitoba.
